When it opened in 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge became the longest suspension bridge in the world, some 50 percent longer than any previously built. Six days after opening, a rumor that it was going to collapse caused panic and a stampede that resulted in the death of at least twelve people. They weren’t the first.
